YouTube thumbnail size and safe areas (2026)
The numbers for YouTube thumbnails changed in recent years, and many older guides still list the old limits. Below are the current requirements as stated in YouTube Help, followed by practical guidance on where to put text and faces so nothing important gets covered.
Specs change; always confirm on YouTube's official page: Add video thumbnails on YouTube. Figures below were checked against that page on 23 October 2026.
Current thumbnail requirements
- Recommended resolution: 3840 × 2160 pixels for regular videos (16:9). YouTube asks for an image "as large as possible" because it is also used as the preview image in the embedded player.
- Minimum width: 640 pixels.
- Aspect ratio: 16:9 for videos; 9:16 for Shorts; 1:1 for podcast playlists.
- Formats: JPG or PNG.
- File size: up to 50 MB when uploading from a computer; 2 MB for video thumbnails when uploading from mobile (10 MB for podcasts).
The often-quoted 1280 × 720 and 2 MB figures come from the older version of these guidelines. 1280 × 720 is still a valid 16:9 size and is the largest ("maxres") size listed in the YouTube Data API thumbnail reference, so a 1280 × 720 file is fine if you work at that size. If you design at 3840 × 2160, everything in this guide scales by a factor of three.
Why the 16:9 ratio matters
The API documentation notes that an image that does not match the required dimensions is resized without changing its aspect ratio, which can add black bars rather than crop. Designing at exactly 16:9 avoids letterboxing. Common sizes that are exactly 16:9: 1280 × 720, 1920 × 1080, 2560 × 1440, 3840 × 2160.
Safe areas: where not to put important things
YouTube does not publish an official "safe area" template, so the advice below comes from how thumbnails are displayed rather than from a spec. Check it against your own previews.
The duration badge (bottom right)
Every regular video shows its length in a small dark badge over the bottom-right corner of the thumbnail. On a 1280 × 720 canvas, keeping roughly the bottom-right 20% of the width and 15% of the height free of text and faces is a sensible margin. Badges also appear for things like "LIVE" or "Members only" in some contexts.
The progress bar (bottom edge)
For viewers who have partly watched a video, a red progress bar runs along the bottom edge. Avoid thin text right on the bottom line.
Rounded corners and edges
Thumbnails are shown with rounded corners in most current layouts. Keep a small margin, a few percent of the width, from all edges.
Hover and overlays
On desktop, hovering may start an inline preview and show overlay icons. You cannot design around everything, but the centre and the upper-left are the least obstructed regions.
Text size that survives small displays
A thumbnail designed at 1280 px wide is often displayed at a small fraction of that width. A practical test: shrink the image to about 240 px wide and see if the text is still readable. If it is not, use fewer words, a heavier font, or larger type. Contrast matters as much as size: a light outline or shadow around text helps on busy backgrounds.
Shorts thumbnails
Shorts use a vertical 9:16 frame. YouTube Help also notes that for vertical videos with a 16:9 custom thumbnail, an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail may be shown on home, explore and subscription pages, while the custom thumbnail still appears in places like the watch feed and history. If Shorts are a big part of your channel, check how your frame looks in a 4:5 crop as well.
Common mistakes
- Exporting at 4:3 or a custom crop and getting black bars.
- Uploading from a phone and hitting the 2 MB mobile limit with a large PNG. Export as JPG or upload from a computer.
- Designing text that fills the full width edge to edge, leaving it clipped by rounded corners.
- Assuming the full-size design is what viewers see. Always check the small version.
A quick template workflow
- Create a canvas at 1280 × 720 or 3840 × 2160.
- Add guides at about 5% from every edge, plus a box in the bottom-right corner for the badge.
- Place the subject and text inside the guides.
- Export as JPG (smaller) or PNG (sharper text), and check the file size for the device you upload from.
- Preview the result in realistic layouts before publishing; see how to preview a thumbnail.
